Getting started
Tab Sheriff groups your tabs by domain automatically. New tabs are added to the right group, and you can define custom groups for sites that matter to you. At the bottom of the popup (Main or Pro tab), Copy kit copies the page URL, or a line like “This link here: [URL] - [page title]”, or saves/copies a screenshot; Focus mode (orange Focus button to the right of Sound Sheriff) collapses other tab groups in this window so you can concentrate on the active tab’s group. Sound Sheriff lists tabs playing audio or muted so you can mute or unmute them.
FAQ
- How do I create a custom group? Open the popup → Define Groups → Add a group name → Assign domains or URLs.
- Groups show only a coloured square — no title? Chrome sometimes loses titles. Tab Sheriff repairs them automatically; you can also open the popup to trigger a refresh.
- How does Pro work? Sign in with Google from the Pro tab. Pro includes saved workspaces, duplicate tab review, inactive group rules, optional domain analytics, and optional sync for your custom group settings. See Privacy Policy for cloud features.
- What is “Sync group settings” (Pro)? When sync is on, Tab Sheriff stores your custom group definitions in your Pro account and can download them when you use the same account elsewhere. It is off by default until you turn it on in the popup (Pro section). See our Privacy Policy for what is stored.
- New Chrome profile, reinstall, or empty setup — how do I get my groupings back? Sign in with the same Pro account. In the popup, open the Pro section and turn Sync group settings on. If this profile has no custom groups yet, you will be asked whether to load saved settings from your account — choose that to pull your cloud copy. If nothing appears (e.g. slow network), check your connection and open the popup again. If you already have different groups on this device and want one source of truth, import a master backup on the Main tab first, then enable sync.
- What is Copy kit? Use Copy URL for the address only, or Copy URL + text for a single line like This link here: [URL] - [page title]. You can also save or copy a screenshot of the visible tab. The same row of buttons appears on the Main and Pro tabs. Copied text and screenshots stay in your browser unless you paste or save them elsewhere—see Privacy Policy.
- What is Focus mode? On the Main tab, use the orange Focus button to the right of Sound Sheriff in the bottom row. Focus collapses every other tab group in the current window so only the group that contains your active tab stays expanded (if your tab isn’t in a group, all groups collapse). Exit focus restores each group’s collapsed state from before. Nothing is sent to our servers—see Privacy Policy.
- What is Sound Sheriff? A free tool in the popup (Main tab → button next to Import). It lists tabs in the current window that are playing audio or are muted, so you can Mute or Unmute each tab, mute all except the active tab, mute all tabs, or unmute every muted tab at once. Hover the button for a short description. Nothing is sent to our servers—see Privacy Policy.
- Is my data private? Free users: group data stays on your device unless you use Pro features that save to the cloud. Copy kit, Focus mode, and Sound Sheriff only use Chrome’s APIs (and local storage for focus snapshots) in your browser. Pro: see our Privacy Policy for details.
- Why does a feedback form ask me to sign in to Google? That is controlled in Google Forms (not the extension). The form owner should open the form in Google Forms → Settings → Responses and turn off Limit to 1 response if it is on (that option requires a Google account). Under who can respond, choose Anyone / anyone with the link if you want no sign-in.
